EARLY 18TH CENTURY OVAL PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN - CIRCLE OF JONATHAN RICHARDSON (1667-1745) A highly decorative and richly coloured early 18th century portrait of a distinguished English gentleman, by an artist in the circle of Jonathan Richardson. The elegant and attractive sitter is depicted half length within the oval. His head is inclined to face us directly, and he fixes us with the most confident gaze. This gentleman status is further confirmed by his costume of a white shirt and stock and vibrant velvet jacket all of which are which typical of aristocratic gentlemen of the period. He also sports a full and tightly curled chestnut wig which tumbles around his shoulders. This fine work is is presented in an excellent state of conservation, and is ready to hang and enjoy in its original and magnificent, antique carved and gilded frame. Jonathan Richardson the Elder (1667-1745). Richardson was an English artist, collector of drawings and writer on art theory, working as a portrait painter in London. He himself trained under John Riley, living with him until Riley's death in 1691 (he married Riley's niece) and was the master of artists Thomas Hudson and George Knapton. By 1705 he was commanding prices for his paintings that were comparable to those of Godfrey Kneller, the most fashionable portrait painter in England at the time. George Vertue placed Richardson, along with Kneller, Michael Dahl and Charles Jervas in the elite group of portraitists who led the field in 'great business and esteem amongst people of quality' (Vertue, Notebooks, 3.138). He painted a wide range of aristocratic and professional sitters including members of noble English and Scottish families such as those of the first Earl of Roxburghe, the second Earl of Oxford, the first Duke of Montrose, eminent writers including Alexander Pope and Richard Steele and prominent medical men such as Sir Hans Sloane. Although he turned down two invitations to be Court Painter, he painted a full length portrait of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1736 (now in Warwick Castle). Richardson was an influential writer and is credited with inspiring Joshua Reynolds to paint and theorise with his book published in 1715 'An Essay on the Theory of Painting'. This book is known to be the first significant work of artistic theory in English. Richardson also published with his son Jonathan the Younger (1694-1771) 'An Account of Some of the Statues, Bas reliefs, Drawings and Pictures in Italy' in 1722. The book was compiled by Richardson using material gathered by his son, Jonathan, whilst touring Italy and it became very popular, being used by young men as the basis of their Grand Tour and also as the basis for future purchases of art by wealthy collectors, therefore shaping English interest in foreign old Masters. Richardson was also a prolific and skilled draughtsman especially during the last fifteen years of his life and made a number of chalk drawings of friends and family and painted and drew many self portraits. Richardson himself was a great collector of drawings by earlier masters and when he died in 1745 he left a large and valuable collection of 4,749 drawings, one of the finest in Britain. The sitter, seated in a yellow silk gown trimmed with a pink bow playing the cello, is believed to be the artist Balthazar Denner's eldest daughter Catharina (1715-1744), after his marriage to Esther Winter in Hamburg in 1712. She is also recognisable in another portrait of the Denner family in the Hamburg Kunsthalle, painted circa 1740 by the artist's son, Jacob Denner (1722-1765). Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame. Provenance: Private collection, Northern Germany Professor Helmut Borsch-Supan, Berlin, confirmed the authenticity of the painting after examining it in 2013.
