About the Item

This is not your typical child’s portrait. Young Ellen Warfield is steadily pouring tea or coffee in a proper manner that certainly conforms to societal expectations of the 1950’s. The oil on canvas portrait is identified on the reverse as to the sitter, Ellen Warfield, her age - about 9, place - New Canaan, Connecticut and date 1956. The young Ellen is dressed in her casual finest with a lovely hat as well. Her sweet determination shows as she masters the proper manners of the day. Behind her hangs a family portrait from the distant past that looks down approvingly. The blue and white china is rendered well against the clean and vaguely modernist colors of the green velvet sofa and her pink blouse. Ellen’s straight blond hair and pure complexion add to the simple quality of the composition. The painting alone measures 22” x 28” and is signed very discreetly in the lower right “Margaret Ward”. The painting is in very good condition with clean bright colors and a tight, lightly varnished surface to the canvas. The frame is of the period and of light colors, suggesting a nod to modern times and color choices. It too is in good vintage condition with overall measurements 25” x 33”. The work is ready to hang in your location of choice to fully enjoy. This stylish portrait reminds one of a simpler time and harks back to the proper manners and attitudes that old New England families sought to preserve at the time.

Fine Impressionist American School Oil on Canvas; Family Picnic or Outing, 1925
Located in Baltimore, MD
This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. Visible on the reverse side is a vintage label that reads “Art...

Pierre-Louis Bouchard French, (1831-1889) Une Bonne Tasse de Thé Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 23 inches x 13.75 inches Size including frame: 35 inches x 25.75 inches A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person. Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...
