About the Item
From the artist who created the famous Che Guevara poster comes another powerful political portrait. With the same graphic boldness, Paul Davis depicts the presidential candidate George McGovern proudly rising above the landscape of America.
Paul Davis symbolizes urban America with a stylized skyscraper city on the left and to the right a rural town with a hilly backdrop.
We can not find a published version of this artwork.
It appears the 1972 McGovern campaign who commissioned the artwork passed on it for a version reminiscent of Norman Rockwell,
where the candidate's face appears in the center of a composite showing the diversity of the American populace.
While the cartoony published version " Together with McGovern" ( Libary of Congress ) may have been better for its wide political appeal,
the alternate version shown here has greater artistic merit in its simple and powerful presentation with a stenciled headline.
In his time, Davis was a giant name in graphic design and illustration. He did many posters during the 1970's and 1978's and his most iconic was that of Che Guevara.

Supporters of George McGovern for President
By Fred McDarrah
Located in Surfside, FL
George Stanley McGovern (July 19, 1922 – October 21, 2012) was an American historian, author, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and the Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election.
This Was a Convention in New York, July 12 1972
----
Over a 50-year span, McDarrah documented the rise of the Beat Generation, the city’s postmodern art movement, its off-off-Broadway actors, troubadours, politicians, agitators and social protests.
Fred captured Jack Kerouac frolicking with women at a New Year’s bash in 1958, Andy Warhol adjusting a movie-camera lens in his silver-covered factory, and Bob Dylan offering a salute of recognition outside Sheridan Square near the Voice’s old office.
Not just a social chronicler, McDarrah was a great photo-journalist.
For years, McDarrah was the Voice's only photographer and, for decades, he ran the Voice’s photo department, where he helped train dozens of young photographers, including James Hamilton, Sylvia Plachy, Robin Holland and Marc Asnin. His mailbox was simply marked "McPhoto."
An exhibit of McDarrah’s photos of artists...
