About the Item
Anonymous, 18th century
Inspired by a painting by Petrus Staverenus (1610/1612 – 1654-07-28/1664-07-28) from a series of Five Senses
'Taste: A laughing man with an upturned glass'
Oil on canvas
74.5 x 60 cm. (excl. frame)
Condition: Overall in good condition, one small scratch in the background and an old restoration (tear in the canvas restored, see images)
The original serie consists of five paintings depicting the personification of the five senses: Sight: A young woman pointing; Hearing: A man counting coins; Smell: A laughing man smoking a pipe; Taste: A laughing man with an upturned glass (image included in imagegallery)
Petrus Staverenus (fl. 1624 – 1654) was a Dutch painter, who painted tronies in the manner of Frans Hals and Adriaen Brouwer.
Little is known of his life. He became a member of the Confrerie Pictura in 1635. He is best known today for engravings by Abraham Blooteling, Jan Verkolje and others, mostly depicting his expressive heads of people in various activities. The Museum Bredius has one of his notebooks in their collection.
(Wikipedia)
A similar gesture is seen in the painting 'The Fingernail Test / Boy with a glass and a lute' by Frans Hals or Judith Leyster:
The fingernail Test (image included in imagegallery)
The Fingernail Test is an oil-on-canvas Dutch Golden Age painting that has been attributed to either Frans Hals or Judith Leyster, painted in 1626 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
The painting is also known as Boy with a glass and a lute and shows a young lute-player wearing a beret and a draped cloak over his chest, tilting his glass to show it is empty while facing the viewer in order to say "time is up".
In the 17th century, the gesture of tipping the glass down to see if a drop of wine appears on a fingernail was a method to show one wanted a refill. The scene is often shown with figures in theatrical costumes. (Wikipedia)

Gerard ter Borch (II) (1617-1681), copy after, around 1700
'Boy Fleas a Dog'
Oil on canvas
Professionally restored (cleaned and relined)
In modern frame in 17th century style
Dimensions excl. frame: 33 x 27,5 cm.

Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat.
What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention.
Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman.
Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)).
The original painting is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany.
