Poen de Wijs
Man with Turban - 21st Century Contemporary Acrylic Portrait by Poen de Wijs

2000

About the Item

Poen de Wijs died a few years ago after a sickbed. His oeuvre lives on. He achieved international fame in the second half of the last century in which abstract, experimental painting was at its peak. There were not many galleries that showed realistic work and supporters and opponents wrote very differently. From 1990 his exhibitions were organized by gallery De Twee Pauwen in The Hague and gallery Bonnard in Nuenen. Internationally, exhibitions and presentations were held in Indonesia, Germany (Frankfurt and Jade), Switzerland (Interlaken and Basel), Kenya (Nairobi), USA (Chicago and New York), Austria (Innsbruck) and Spain (Madrid). Poen de Wijs painted a lot thematically: his love for classical music was expressed in the theme “Alma Musica” (1993). In "A Kenyan Holiday" (1995) and "The Clothes of the Geisha" (2000), his love of travel and other cultures were integrated into his work. The theater theme is visible in "Prima Vista, Mini and Maxi in portrait" (2002) and "Moments" (2011). Another theme that is constantly recurring in the work of Poen de Wijs is children from various cultures: “Kinderspel” (2011). New techniques and possibilities Poen de Wijs has never restricted himself to one and the same painting technique, or shunned experimenting, on the contrary, he constantly experimented and discovered new techniques, possibilities and applications. He has studied and practiced old painting techniques to integrate them into new possibilities. His realistic style has evolved through the changes in the application of painting materials. In 1999, Poen de Wijs stopped using oil paint and switched to acrylic. A new development in his work is the use of metallic paints in acrylic. He applies layers of gold, silver or copper paint over part of the underpainting. A spectator sees two completely different representations, depending on the angle in which one views the artwork. This metallic effect gives an almost three-dimensional effect. Publications Books, iBooks (Apple iBookstore), documentaries and articles have been published about Poen de Wijs, about his works and also about his various painting techniques. In the course of his career, art critics had very different views on his work, but all agreed on its technical quality. Passing away In the last phase of his life, Poen de Wijs was seriously ill and saw his end approaching. He wrote a text about this; "Some of you know that I am sick, many do not. The end is coming, I am at peace with it. I have painted over 900 works, I leave many drawings and lithographs. These are going around the world. different people will help with this. Many of the students that I have been able to train over the years go their own way. I had wonderful contacts with fellow artists from all disciplines. I was never short of enthusiasts and admirers of my work. family and friends have always been dear to me. I have shared a lot with them. Last but not least: my dear wife Marleen Looijen and her daughter Sarah continue without me. Fortunately, they remain well cared for. to let go. "

Acrylic paint on canvas Signed on the back Zahra ZEINALI was born in 1975 in Tehran, Iran. From 2001 to 2004, she studied Fine arts at the Art and Architecture University in Tehran. At the same time, she taught visual arts to children during 15 years. Passionate about photography, she trained in photography in 2007 at the House of Photography in Tehran. In 2012, she moved to France. Confronted with her new life, her vision of the world changed. Since 2020, she has resumed training in photography at the EFET School in Paris. Zahra ZEINALI The Doll’s House “What can a true artistic temperament aspire to after a youth spent in Iran today? To flee the hassles, prejudices, restrictions, to open wide a window of freedom rich in potentialities that were believed for a long time inaccessible. Zahra Zeinali became a visual arts teacher for fifteen years. Her pupils are 6 to 12 years old. Drawing, sculpture, painting, model design, she taught them a great diversity of techniques, but above all to think and design freely by themselves, in an atmosphere of joyful creative disorder which, surprisingly, is tolerated by a careful hierarchy. Then she studied four years at the University of Art and Architecture in Tehran. When she arrived in France, after a brief abstract period inspired by the rhythms of nature, it was at the time of the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, which marked her deeply, to the point of lastingly darkening the ideal of emancipation and autonomy that she had projected on her stay in Paris. "There is no paradise on earth" she concluded with a melancholy smile. An old doll, bought for 1 euro in a storage room, triggers a click in her. The bitter imprint left by the Iranian confinement, the memory of her fifteen years of teaching visual arts to children, the loneliness of her Parisian exile, all this sentimental nebula found a plastic metaphor in the image of the doll. This is what these delicate earthenware faces evoke, often abused, abandoned, the childish innocence of their ingenuous gazes, a sort of strange absence from the world of the living, as if their attenuated life took place behind the mystery of a theater curtain...
