About the Item
Baltimore-born Thaddeus Haduch was mainly known as a landscape artist. He was born to Polish immigrant parents in East Baltimore in 1905. It seems that he lived his entire life in a small rowhouse at 1910 Eastern Avenue with his father, mother and sister. Like many working class families of the time period, manufacturing jobs were readily available. Haduch worked as upholsterer and decorator for a local furniture maker. On the side, Haduch painted. Scenes of the city and neighboring towns seemed to be his typical subject choice. He ventured as far as Pennsylvania to do so. His paintings often feature buildings, rendered in a WPA style by which he was surely influenced. He died in Baltimore in 1964.
This is a very stylized portrait that is almost surely a self portrait. It shows a young Thaddeus in a dream-like pose. Surrounded by urban buildings that dominate the foreground, the verdant rolling hills of the countryside seem to beckon beyond. His plaid shirt seems to be more country than city-like. Moreover, he is entangled in barbed wire and wrought iron gates that appear to be holding him back from realizing his dreams. This type of social commentary was typical for earlier Ashcan and WPA artists. Haduch added an extra element to the composition with the use of strong diagonals that seem to fracture the scene much like Charles Sheeler and the the Precisionists were composing a little earlier. The painting is not signed by Haduch, but was purchased about twenty years ago with several other signed paintings by him that were similar in style and color range. His paintings are somewhat rare but very distinctive. Most of his paintings, when dated, are between the years 1948 and 1956, and this work would be as well. There is some very faint wording on the backside that seems to indicate an early 1950's date.
The painting is oil on masonite and measures 18" x 24". It is in very good, cleaned condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a period wood frame that is painted brown with a dark green highlight and a black inner liner. It too is in good condition and suits the painting well. Overall framed measurements are about 22" x 28". The framed work has relative substantial weight, given the materials used.
This WPA-era inspired work is a bold and thought-provoking painting that speaks to its time period but continues to be a relevant subject matter and will likely be so with future generations to come.

"Don't Cry Long" Abstracted and Distorted Self-Portrait, One Crying Eye
Located in Detroit, MI
"Don't Cry Long" is a self-portrait of the artist and an unusual one at that in which the artist portrays herself shedding tears. Perhaps it is an expression of some grief experienced by Ms. Woodlock, but it also admonishes her to not "Cry Long" while at the same time poking fun because of her elongated face and the one lone "long" tear tracing a pattern down her face. In addition to self-portraits, Ethelyn painted commissioned portraits. In this painting her head is cocked and her famous bangs hang down her forehead. Compare two self-portraits, “Up From Under”, and “M’Eyes" to "Don't Cry Long." The major differences are the close facial view and the brilliant blood red paint that fills the entire canvas.
This painting is included in the book, "Dreams Have Wings: An Artist's Journey into Magic and Mystery" printed in the United States, 1985. She describes "Don't Cry Long" as showing how funny looking we are, if we cry too long.
