Jessie Alpha Lanham
Vintage Midland, Texas Oil Painting by Alpha Lanham (1885-1972), ca 1950

ca 1950

About the Item

This is a lovely oil on board landscape by noted Midland, Texas artist Alpha Johnson Lanham. It is a view of old stone steps within a landscape. The painting is an essay in paint application and light and shadow. Ms. Lanham used her artistic talents to convincingly render the steps in various color shades to express depth, sunlight and shadow. Her post-impressionist style is fully developed in the surrounding landscape as well. Born in 1885, Jessie Alpha Johnson married Frank Hart Lanham, Sr in 1903. He was from a longtime Texas family. Alpha was a known local artist and this painting was exhibited not long after completed. There is the remains of the exhibition label on the back, along with the title of the work “Stone Steps” and her address at 2510 W. Louisiana in Midland. The painting dates to the late 1940’s or perhaps the early 1950’s. The painting itself measures 11” x 13” and was recently cleaned and varnished. It is housed in a wide bronze painted wood frame that complements the work rather well. Overall framed measurements are about 15” x 17 1/2”. Both the painting and frame are in good condition and ready to hang on the wall and enjoy.
