About the Item
This harbor scene oil painting is by noted Massachusetts artist Albert Rufus Thayer. Thayer was born in Concord in 1878 and studied in Boston and New York before returning to his home state and becoming a teacher and member of the Rockport Art Association. He was both a painter and illustrator and was known for his portrait of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy.
The painting is of an active harbor area, possibly on Cape Ann or perhaps Cape Cod. Thayer's attention to detail is very evident and the intricacy of his brushstrokes, some with light impasto, does not disappoint. Bright summer light fills the scene. The bridge shown in the near distance must be identifiable, whether it still exists or not. The painting is oil on board and is signed lower right A. R. Thayer. It is is very good condition, measuring 12" x 16". It is housed in a wide quality gold frame that complements the work well. The framed dimensions are 17" x 21". The frame is in good condition with only a few minor rub spots to the edge finish, here and there. This classic New England harbor scene shows a slight modernist touch and would liven up any wall or room.
