About the Item
If you are a world traveler or lover of exotic locales, this might be the painting for you. The scene depicted is likely a North African town or village, perhaps Morocco or Tunisia. The sunlit white building is in stark contrast to the old market building on the other side of what appears to be an outdoor shopping arcade. The painting is oil on canvas and probably dates to the 1930’s or early 1940’s. Unsigned, the artist was very adept at portraying the intensity of the sun and feeling of heat. An added bonus is the shadow pattern on the building surface from the tree depicted in the front well.. There is a modern sensibility to the work as the simple forms and color choices work well together. The light and shadow portions of the scene are superbly balanced as well. Along with the cerulean blue sky and tree tops hovering above the market building, the people dressed in white garb complete the scene and make for an attractive and engaging work to behold.
The oil on canvas measures 16” x 24”, is in very good condition and retains a New York area label on the reverse. It is framed in a slightly earlier wide decorative quality frame of the 1920’s period. The overall framed dimensions are 22” x 29 1/2”. The frame shows very minor age issues, such as corner separation that is commensurate with age of over 100 years.
