About the Item

This is a well rendered period view of the Blane Forge and Crafts House in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. It is currently known as the James Anderson House and Blacksmith Shop on Duke of Gloucester Street. It was originally built ca 1770 and restored in 1940. Artist Henry Fritz likely visited the area sometime after World War II to document the building and scene. Fritz chose a soft color palette and added figures in period clothing to the scene, often seen in Williamsburg, a working historical village. The Conestoga wagon is an added element that enhances the historic nature of the composition. Henry Eugene Fritz was born in Germany in 1875. He studied architecture and art at Catholic University, the National Academy, the Ecole Beaux Arts and Columbia University.. Fritz and painted extensively around the continent and throughout the eastern portion of the United States. Often his focus was historic buildings in their setting and this painting fits that description. Fritz moved to Merion, Pa and Chestertown, MD in his later years, passing in 1956. The oil on board measures 10” x 14” and is in very good condition. It is signed lower right and noted in Fritz’s pencil on reverse. The gold wood frame adds width and dimension to the work and measures 14 3/4” x 18 3/4” overall.
