Clan Murray, Coat Of Arms, Duke Of Atholl, 18th Century
Scottish School
Large 18th Century Scottish Clan Murray Coats of Arms, oil on canvas. The shield bearing allegiance to the crown of the monarch flanked by Hercules and The Lion symbolising the virtues strength and courage, set underneath the banner with the latin motto "Sub Spe" translating to "In Hope". Presented in ornate foliate and berry gilt frame.
The work most likely represents the circa 1710 crest of John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl after his participation in the Glorious Revolution during the reign of William III and given the Dukedom in 1703 by Queen Anne uniting the motifs of the Murray Clan with those of the sovereign. Unsigned
