Good condition
The French realistic school of peasant life had several trends including that of academic painters who focused on rendering the beauty of the peasant condition. These are painters who studied in workshops of academic painters like Gérôme, Cabanel and Lesquien for example. This school gave hyper realistic scenes and portraits at the end of the 19th century, in Brittany in particular. We think of painters like Istres Contencin, Lionel Royer or Jules Trayer for example.
Our painting is part of this movement. We know the model by an inscription on the back "Rozenn" which is "Rose" in Breton. A true piece of painting that reminds of the expressive heads of old men and women in the 18th century in France, but also the beautiful, very expressionist paintings of northern old masters like Jacob Jordaens.

Henri Langerock was a Belgian painter born in Ghent but who worked in France and died in Marseille. He also traveled a lot, in France and abroad. Langerock first became known for his landscapes of France (Vosges, Picardy, Ardèche...). Then he traveled to Egypt and Brazil between 1878 and 1885, as well as to black Africa.
He exhibited his painting of a traveling painter at the Paris Salon until 1901.
