About the Item

This lovely British portrait oil painting is by noted artist Lionel Ellis. Painted in 1929 it is a half length standing portrait of a young woman in a blue dress with a white lace shawl. She has her hand on her hip and is turning to gaze at the artist/viewer. Ellis excels at facial features and also hands and skin tones. A super painting housed in a fine bourlet frame. Signed and dated 1929 lower left. Provenance. Previous estate of Barbara Shaw, the artist's wife. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate frame, 37 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Lionel Ellis ARCA (1903-1988) was an important twentieth-century painter, illustrator, engraver and teacher who specialised in portraits, as well as equestrian and floral subjects. He studied at the Plymouth school of Art 1918-22 and Royal College of Art 1922-25 and won a travelling scholarship in 1925 travelling to Colarossi's, Paris, Florence and Rome. He taught at Wimbledon School of Art between 1937 and 1968 and lived in Headley, Surrey. His partner was fellow artist Barbara Shaw. His work is held at the V&A Museum, the British Museum and provincial museums. He exhibited 1927-33. New English Art Club 3, Redfern Gallery 45.
