About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Ixiptla” was inspired by a dream of simultaneous annihilation and exhilaration. It is a 36 x 24 x .25 inch acrylic and mixed media painting on tempered hardwood, in luscious tones of green, blue, orange, yellow, pink and black. Over an electric landscape, a radiant sun full of blooming flowers moves towards it’s opposite black ‘sun’. In the abstracted landscape below there is an alter, where radial lines of red seem to communicate with the dueling suns above. The Ixiptla is the vessel for the Aztec sun-god, annihilating its former self as it is born again. This painting is unframed and the signature is on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
