Sandra Cohen
"the Landing", abstract, red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, acrylic painting

2021

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “the Landing” is a 20 x 16 x .25 inch acrylic painting on tempered hardboard, in red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and white. A crooked staircase at bottom left mixes with a pattern of diamonds and leads up toward an unseen staircase landing. Reappearing upside-down at the top, the staircase appears to be lightening over vibrant colors glowing with energy. ‘play’ and ‘fast-forward’ audio controls are overlaid in-between. Like many of Cohen’s pieces, this was conceived as reversible: upside-down the buttons read in reverse, and the mysterious occurrence on the landing could be reset. This painting is unframed and the signature is on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

THE OCCUPANT 2020 Paris, France A smaller work done in parallel to a complimentary piece ‘WOMBS, TOMBS, TOOLS,’ which portrays hand-painted serif typeset words ‘THE OCCUPANT.’ A ribbon of black along the base of the work hosts a line which reads: “The offices in the desert vending out futures -- if you had gotten a good one you too would want them all to know -- where our bodies have been.” The work is a commentary on the spaces we inhabit, and how they are all temporary. Paint is acrylic with the exception of the red elements, which are formed with oil paint. The painting is executed on two connected, reclaimed wood panels...
