Shelter Serra
Mario (Grin), 2018, Ink and pencil on paper, black and white, by Shelter Serra

2018

About the Item

Mario (Grin) 2018 16”x16.5”x1.25” inches Sumi ink and pencil on Japanese Washi Paper Mario, the main character from the Super Mario Bros. video game is one of the most recognizable images and a true archetype of our contemporary society. This traditional hand-drawn portrait of Mario in ink on paper, renders his likeness akin to a snapshot, or cell, removing him from the digital realm and freezing him in our tangible world of reality. Shelter Serra’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings explore mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes subject matters that are both common and recognizable: a Campbell's Soup Can, a copper plated baseball hat, and a Hermes Birkin bag cast in resin, as examples. By portraying these sculptures of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.” Shelter Serra, who is related to minimalist master Richard Serra, has collaborated with the Art Production Fund, Helmut Lang, Converse, and Chanel. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at BTW Gallery in Geneva, Anonymous Gallery in Mexico City, Beams B Gallery in Tokyo, and Marlborough Gallery in New York, among other galleries. His work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as Philadelphia’s ICA, Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, and Urbis Art Centre in Manchester.

Blue Boy of the North Atlantic - Octopus on Antique Nautical Chart Gyotako Style
By Jeff Conroy
Located in Chicago, IL
A small octopus is inked in the Japanese style of Gyo-Taku print making. Using sumi ink to "print" the octopus, the artist then embellishes it with colored pencil to convey an extraordinary dimensionality. By printing it on a nautical chart, in this case a pilot chart of the Northern Atlantic Ocean from 1945, the artist achieves a beautiful aesthetic. The artwork is unframed. This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper. It is rumored that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using Gyotaku prints...
