This framed Ink painting by Shiri Mordechay has a beautiful openness with the way the paint is handled, allowing full attention to the curious faces presented. Depicted is a face with a curious expression, the ink creates a marvelous texture as it bleeds into itself.
Shiri Mordechay was born in Israel and raised in Nigeria. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York, where she now resides. Her work has been included in exhibitions in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Italy. In 2013, Mordechay was named one of “25 Artists to Watch & Collect” by Artvoices Magazine, and has been profiled by Juxtapoz, Artillery and Art in America magazines. She was featured in the 2020 New American Paintings publication, juried by Jerry Saltz and, that same year, she was awarded an artist residency at Governors’ Island. Mordechay's carnivalesque scenes are filled with combinatory figures, often in lewd positions with exaggerated genitalia. With references to pop culture subtly sprinkled in, these imaginary
realities overlap with our own, asking how removed we truly are from these displays of debauchery. Imagery seems to arrive by chance and move about within a pre-moral realm.
