'Courage, Wisdom, Protection'. Blue White Nature leaves

2018

About the Item

'Courage, Wisdom, Protection' Original Artwork ______________________ Layers of simplistic beauty, the mountain ash tree offers courage, wisdom and protection. The painting captures an essence of the ephemeral and the enduring in the context of floriography- the symbolic language of plants and flowers, which for thousands of years has been a means of cryptological communication across cultures. This original artwork is from a body of work titled 'Elemental', in which Sophia employs her unique method of working using the four elements of nature- earth, air, fire and water. The physical process of creating this painting embodies the tangible moment when the elemental forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: spring sunlight dancing through dappled leaves cast a delicate shadow, and like the morning sun in a spider's web, becomes a physical presence. "I am rather like Mrs Darling, finding Peter Pan's shadow '...Quite the ordinary kind...' I roll it up and put it away carefully in a drawer". The painting is scratched and scarred, by tactile movements of the breeze, the tumbling stream water: memories intrinsically embedded. A narrative portrait of a moment. The work is characterised by this practice of plein air working, including various marks, dents, or cockling from long periods of being submerged and washed. Unique original artwork. Cyanotype photogram on board Ready to hang. Float-mounted, framed & glazed (Hand finished Italian hardwood frame). Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; Haiku inscribed in pencil to lower centre; studio label, signed and titled to verso. 71.5 x 18 cm / 28.1 x 7 inches (Framed 90 x 36.5 cm / 35.5 x 14.4 inches) _________________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist. Her work is an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in chaos and harmony; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the ephemeral nature of all things. Sophia's works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. ____________________________________ Modern . This unique multistep technique is a combination of a painting and a photograph or monotype. Cyanotypes are a kind of alternative photographic process from the 1800s. The chemicals are different from those used in black and white photography. The light-sensitive chemicals can be used to print blue and white photographs from a large negative or a person can capture the silhouette of solid objects rather like an x-ray in blue and white. In her Delft Garden series, artist Christine So first drew the outline of a plant in pencil and then painted it in a dark room —not paint– but with the cyanotype light-sensitive emulsion. When the painting had dried, she arranged plants on top of the painted silhouette in a pattern that would leave gaps like lace, carefully moved the entire bundle outside while still covered and then exposed the pattern multiple times at different angles to the sun, to achieve various shades of blue and white. The heavy cotton watercolor paper then needed to be thoroughly rinsed in order to stop the darkening process. The silhouette here is of the Giant California Tree...
