About the Item

Barend Blankert (December 30, 1941 – July 11, 2023) was a Dutch painter known for his quiet, melancholic works. Born in Kampen, he studied at the National Normal School for Art Teachers in Amsterdam. From 1971 to 1992, he taught at the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen, where he inspired many young artists. Blankert's oeuvre consists of carefully composed, realistic paintings, often featuring solitary human figures in empty, minimalist spaces. His work is marked by a subdued atmosphere, technical precision, and a subtle sense of alienation. Strongly committed to figurative painting, he was admired for his craftsmanship and refined compositions. A recurring theme in his work is introspection and isolation, earning him the nickname “Master of Melancholy.” His paintings are part of several major museum collections. In 2023, shortly after his passing, the Drents Museum honored him with a special exhibition of his work.

Landscape Of A Still-Life - Still-Life by Dutch Painter Sietse W. Jonker
Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
Since August 2018 Sietse W. Jonker belongs to the group of artists that we permanently represent in our stock-exposition. In mid-2019, this still-life artist will take part in a group exhibition devoted to still life in painting. His work can be seen all year round and for sale through our gallery. To get to know us, we visited the artist in his studio in Leeuwarden. a centrally located donkey and a window on the Noorderlicht dominate the space together with the still life that he is currently working on. According to the artist, a still life should not be 'made to look', in the final painting it should ultimately be an ordered harmony. The artist himself: That is not always easy and sometimes I am busy with all kinds of objects here in the house. Every now and then something comes up or something is taken away again until I am satisfied. Usually I have a vague idea of what I want, but to give that 'vague idea' a concrete form is quite difficult. The idea then to create a three-dimensional world on a two dimensional level intrigues Sietse Jonker...
