About the Item
Charles Buckley sources images from the fifties and using acrylic ink, carefully renders familiar scenes of the everyday with lines of varying thicknesses. The subjects run the gamut from elated to unbothered, relaxed to joyful, not knowing that they would become an idea that people long for to this day. Even Buckley’s interiors have a sense of simpler times—a single flower arrangement or a modest living room.
Graphite on paper, unframed.

Charles Buckley
For Charles Buckley, painting as a practice is a means of engaging with the world and investigating preconceived notions. His progression paintings are rendered on multiple canvases and are an investigation of the construction of narrative and progress. Buckley’s work often deals with “leakage,” which he describes as “the area where things cannot be explained rationally, yet fit within the logic of the painting and seem to be known.” Charles Buckley received an MFA at Hunter College in New York and a BFA in painting at the California College Of Arts in Oakland, California.

The essence of Ahn's work begins from the conception of complicated personal struggles as a spouse, an immigrant and an outsider artist in New York. Through creating process, she contemplate both her daily issues and fundamental matters, thus transferring those into physical representation while asking meaningful questions to her audiences about life as reality, relation between people, spiritual being and transcendence.
Ahn is interested in pushing boundaries of traditionalism, thus opening up new dialogue in global context. Through this dialogue she encourage her audience to think about inter-connectedness between tradition and contemporary, West and East, and two contradictory elements. Contradiction, and Paradox is also a main key to understand her works.
