George Loftus Noyes
Old Time Flowers

About the Item

A wonderful impressionist still life with flowers by Canadian American artist George Loftus Noyes (1864-1954). Noyes was born in Ontario, Canada to American parents, moved to America with his family when he was nine, settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts and in later years, Peterborough, New Hampshire. Noyes attended the Massachusetts Normal Art School and apprenticed as a glass painter before going abroad in 1890. He enrolled at the Académie Colarossi in Paris to further his academic training. There he explored the French countryside with fellow American students and discovered his love for painting landscapes en plein air. He returned to Boston in 1893 and exhibited regularly at the Boston Art Club and also with the Boston Society of Water Color Painters. In 1900, Noyes established his own summer school of painting in Annisquam, along the North Shore, where his best-known students were illustrators N. C. Wyeth and Clifford Ashley. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, title inscribed on verso Worcester (MA) Art Museum label “Old Time Flowers,” and housed in a decorative molded giltwood frame, with minor gilt edge losses. Dimensions: 23.5 in H x 25.13 in W, actual; 32.5 in H x 33.5 in W x 2.25 in D. Ref: 8
