Georges Braque was a French painter, renown for cofounding Cubism with Pablo Picasso and profoundly affecting the period of modern art. This oil painting representing a pot of tea and a lemon is an excellent example of the still life genre that was very significant to Georges Braque and his contemporaries during their revolutionary cubist experiments.
The early work of Braque was very much influenced by Paul Cezanne and by 1906, his work changed from an Impressionist to Fauve sensibility. From 1907-8, he started to use a more restrained palette of greens, browns and greys, simplified his forms, and painted his first Cubist pictures. His first solo show was at Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler’s gallery in 1908.
Throughout the 1920s until the late 1940s, George Braque used the theme of still life recurrently to discover, experiment and enrich the cubist vocabulary and create his individual style. His fame grew in 1922, after an exhibition at the Salon d’Automne in Paris.

Georges Braque
Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil, France, in 1882. Braque lived much of his childhood and young adult life in Le Havre. He attended night classes at the art school from 1897–99 and then moved to Paris, where he obtained his license as a master decorator. From 1905–06, after studying at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and having been influenced by the works of Henri Matisse, he began to paint in the way of Fauvism by using bright colors and taking advantage of the freedom of the composition. Paysage à L'Estaque (1906) was one of the prominent works of art made at this time.
The year 1907 was a significant time in Braque's development, wherein he visited the retrospective on Paul Cézanne and he came into contact with Picasso, who was very engrossed in the realization of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon at the time. At this point, Braque began nurturing a considerable interest in primitive art. After the First World War, Braque worked autonomously and developed a more personal style, which was characterized by vivid colors and textured surfaces. Braque painted still life, interior views, and ocean scenes. The Ateliers (1948–55) and Birds (1955–63) series were painted during this period. In 1948, he obtained his first award for painting at the XXIV Biennial in Venice.

Jankel Adler was born in Lodz, Poland and lived a life of wandering. In 1912 he moved to Belgrade where he began training as an engraver with his uncle and then went to Germany in 1914 where he lived for a time with his sister in Barmen. There he studied at the college of arts and crafts with Professor Gustav Wiethücher.
Between 1918 and 1921 he moved between Lodz and Germany until in 1922, he settled in Düsseldorf where he became a teacher at the Academy of Arts, and became acquainted with Paul Klee, who influenced his work. A painting by Adler received a gold medal at the exhibition “German art Düsseldorf” in 1928. In 1933, with the rise of Hitler’s Nazi regime, he left Germany for Paris.
