Ib Eisner'Still Life with Fruit and Flowers', Paris, Tokyo, London, Copenhagen Academy1953
1953
About the Item
Signed lower left, 'Ib Eisner' (Danish, 1925-2003) and dated, lower right, 1953.
Displayed in a period, carved gilt-wood frame. Framed dimensions: 19 x 21.5 x 1.5 inches.
A lyrical, mid-century Post-Impressionist oil still-life showing a view of apples in a blue-and-white porcelain bowl set beside a handful of pink dog-roses loosely arranged in a cobalt vase and set on an aqua-striped tablecloth.
This well-listed Danish Modernist, and 1948 winner of the Wilstrup Scholarship, first studied at the Copenhagen Academy of Arts under Kræsten Iversen and Axel Jørgensen. Eisner later continued his studies in Paris and London and he became known both for his elegantly powerful still-lives and for dynamic figural works, often painted against the background of Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens.
Eisner worked mostly in picture series to more fully explore nuanced changes of lighting moods and seasons. French Impressionist thematic and compositional techniques are noticeable, not only in his preferred method of plein-air painting, which the artist applied in all weather conditions, but also in the treatment and application of color. Eisner applied pure, mostly unmixed, colors next to each other in quick brushstrokes, creating a vibrant structure of bright tones and developing an original picture-intrinsic dynamic. He painted mostly without fixed contour lines or preparatory drawings, since the necessary capturing of the desired, elusive light effects required a consistently rapid and intuitive application of pigment.
Over the course of a long career, Eisner exhibited both domestically and internationally with success, including in Japan, France, Germany and England where he was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. We are pleased to offer an exceptional work from Eisner's early period, painted when the artist was twenty-eight years old.

'Spring Flowers' Paris, National Academy of Design, Chouinard, ASL, Laguna Beach
By Harold Frank
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
An exuberant Post-Impressionist still life of spring flowers shown informally arranged in a creamware vase against a variegated ivory background.
Signed Lower Right 'H. Frank' and painted circa 1975.
After initially studying in Paris, Harold Frank attended the New York Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, Chouinard Art Institute and UCLA where he was a colleague of Richard Diebenkorn, who had a lasting influence on his work. Other artists who deeply affected his creative philosophy included Matisse, Rouault, Picasso and De Kooning.
His one-man and group exhibition record is extensive and he was shown internationally in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Aubonne, Switzerland, as well as throughout the United States from the 1960's through the 80's. Though he did not seek recognition as his reason to create, major awards also came his way (among them the Adolph and Clara Obrig Award and the Sudam Silver Medal from the National Academy of Design; the National Watercolor Society's Grumbacher Award; the John Marin Memorial Award in the Watercolor U.S.A. Show and a First Prize from the Laguna Beach Museum of Art.
His subject matter included pure abstracts, landscapes, still lifes and the male and female head and figure. As many artists have done before and after him, he explored variations of each subject, experimenting with changes in medium, technique, light and color. His remarkable paintings of the female head and form quickly developed into a vehicle for his abstract interpretations. Though his brushwork is quick and sure, he often labored over several pieces at the same time.
This piece is accompanied with a first edition copy of 'Harold Frank: Abstract Expressionist 1921-1995' by Sandie Stern and published by Millenium Twelve Two (2001).

"Pretty Pickins" Post-Impressionist Colorful Floral Oil Painting on Board Framed
Located in New York, NY
A joyous colorful floral still life painting depicting a bunch of freshly picked flowers placed effortlessly. The piece is done in a highly impressionistic manner and is a wonderful display of Reilly's more impromptu style, with bold colors of joyful yellow, deep rouge, and softer colors of light blue, hints of brown, and pops of pink. White ostrich daisies along with blue bluebells, orange, yellow and mamey flowers on a background of bright green grass and dark bushes in the background. This still life in nature, in the garden from nature. This bouquet reminds us of sunny summer days filled with the scent of flowers and nature. This piece is titled and has artist's estate stamp on the back, it comes housed in a contemporary gold leaf plain air wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
