About the Item
Signed lower right with initials 'H.L.' for Harald Leth (Danish, 1899-1986) and painted circa 1935.
Leth commenced his art studies with Johannes Larsen (1921) before attending Harald Giersing's painting school (1921–1923). He later studied with Olaf Rude (1923–1924) and, briefly, with Peter Rostrup Boyesen. During the 1920's, he also studied in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam where he was exposed to the ferment of modernist ideas which led to a general lightening and brightening of his palette. Leth first exhibited at the Charlottenborg autumn exhibition in 1923. He became a member of several avante-garde art movements including the Høstudstillingen (1934–1944), Koloristerne (1946–1950) and Martsudstillingen (1951–1982).
During his summers on the island of Bornholm in the 1920s, Leth became influenced by the work of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, which helped him in the development of his own naturalistic, style. Leth painted landscapes, still lives and interiors, often composed in smaller scale. From 1944, when he moved to the north of Zealand, he adopted an increasingly Coloristic style.
During the course of his long career, Leth exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including the Danish Academy medal (1929), the Eckersberg Medal (1958), the Thorvaldsen Medal (1966) and the Prince Eugen Medal (1983). His work is held in the permanent collection of the National Art Museum of Denmark and in the collection of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Leth is well-listed in Benezit's Dictionary of Artist's, Painters and Sculptors and Weilbach's Dictionary of Artists and all other relevant art reference works.
We are pleased to offer a delicate and perfectly-composed still-life from this notable European Modernist's middle period.

Painting radiates love, warmth and happiness Kristīne Luīze Avotiņa is a young and bright personality whose talent is appreciated not only in Latvia, but also in other parts of the world. Her deep inner experiences and feelings of the soul are not hidden from the eyes of the audience, but are openly and engagingly narrated: about relationships, man and woman, passion, emotions, about experience and connection with nature. Characters live in Kristine's compositional solutions, where figurative painting and ornament appear. When painting large-format works, she masters the entire format, composition and color of the work, as well as linear drawing. Kristīne herself emphasizes: "Relationships between nature and people - it has always been a relevant topic in my painting. The more I work on it, the more interesting it seems to me. It is infinite and unending. With paint I refresh the beauty of nature and love on the canvas and I want to show that nature and love are equal in their beauty. In my works, I always want to show that nature is beautiful and worthy of admiration - a newly blooming water lily, falling leaves from golden trees, a pink sunset sky... This could go on forever..."
