About the Item
French mid century oil on board of an interior by Léon Nancey. Though not signed the painting was acquired directly from the artist's atelier.
This captivating painting depicts a blue ceramic vase filled with a bunch of cascading roses and flowers, to the background a collection of rich fabrics, rich blue, creams and whites. The artist employs bold brushstrokes which form a contrast between the luxurious blues and more muted colours of the rest of the composition creating a textured depth that draws the viewer in. The composition balances realism and impressionism, making it a harmonious blend of intimacy and abstraction. The artist’s distinctive technique offers a glimpse into a serene moment of beauty and calm very reminiscent of the paintings of Matisse from this period.
Léon Nancey was born in Paris and studied there. His earliest exhibitions were at the Salon d'Automne from 1924 and the Salon des Independents. However he went on to exhibit widely in France, Switzerland and elsewhere. During his early career he lived in Grenoble and was associated with the 'artistes Dauphinois' Flandrin, Berger and Deloras. He also found time to teach and one of his most noted pupils was John Paschoud.
