The sumptuous feel of this example alludes to the moody atmosphere of a lamp-lit room, rich and luxurious in quality, owing to the heavy impasto in the rather sonorous palette which he skilfully tempered with the naturalistic colours of the feathers and the shell. When he moved to his home in Temple, Scotland in 1939, Gillies replaced the electric lighting in the house with paraffin lamps, influencing the nature of his still life work. The artist was an ardent collector of still life and found objects which he incorporated into his studio work, among them, pots made by his sister Emma who had died in 1936.
William George Gillies RA RSA (1898-1973) was one of Scotland’s greatest 20th-century painters, working mainly in still-life and landscape depicting East Lothian, Fife and the Borders.
William George Gillies was born in Haddington on 21 September 1898, the son of the High Street tobacconist John Gillies. He grew up in the town and from an early age began to paint the streets and closes of Haddington under the supervision of his art-teacher uncle, William Ryle Smith. They also took trips to Edinburgh to paint, and so the young William Gillies was exposed to the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition of new Scottish work.
He attended the Knox Institute (now Knox Academy) alongside his good friend Norman W. Porteous, who would later become Principle of New College, Edinburgh University. He was encouraged to become a painter by the then editor of The Haddington Courier – R.A. Dakers, who was an amateur painter himself. Dakers taught Gillies the techniques involved in oil painting, and soon he had his first exhibition in the shop window of a watchmaker – Alexander Wright – on the High Street.
In 1916, aged 18, Gillies was accepted as a student at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA). However, his studies were cut short in the spring of 1917 when he was called up to serve in World War I. Although wounded twice, he returned safely to Scotland in 1919 and resumed his studies at ECA that year. In 1922 he founded the 1922 Group with fellow students and they began to exhibit around Edinburgh. After graduating he was awarded a scholarship to travel overseas. He went with fellow student William Geissler to Paris where they attended the academy of André Lhote – a member of the Cubist School. In 1924 he travelled on to Italy before returning to Scotland.
In 1925 he started teaching Art at Inverness Academy before moving back to Edinburgh to take up a teaching post at his former College of Art. Here he would continue to teach for the next 40 years and become principal before retiring in 1966. Throughout this time he continued to produce celebrated and highly influential work of his own.
In 1970 Gillies was awarded a large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy; he also received a knighthood for his services to Scottish art and was elected Academician of the Royal Academy.
Sir William George Gillies died on 15 April 1973 in his cottage at Temple, Midlothian.
Thanks to Haddington’s History Society, a commemorative plaque at 6 High Street now marks the place of his birth.

Tadeusz Piotr (Peter) Potworowski was a Polish abstract and figurative painter who lived and exhibited in Paris, Poland, Sweden and England.
Potworowski was born in Warsaw in 1898. After serving in the First World War, Potworowski enrolled at the Warsaw University of Technology to study architecture, though his studies were halted by the Bolshevik campaign. After the end of the Polish-Soviet War in 1921, Potworowski returned to Warsaw and began to study art at the school of Konrad Krzyżanowski. By the following year, he had taken a place at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he studied under Józef Pankiewicz. It was Pankiewicz who incorporated Potworowski into the Paris Commute, or Kapists, a group of Polish artists who travelled to the French capital in 1924.
During his seven years in Paris he became personally acquainted with Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard, Jean Cocteau, Constantin Brancusi and attended for a short time Fernand Léger's studio. It was through this job that he met his first wife Magdalena Mańkowska, a student of anthropology in Paris. After marrying in France, and visiting Britain in 1928, the couple returned to Poland in 1930, where their first son John was born.
In 1931, Warsaw was the locale of the first Kapists exhibition, entitled New Generation, which took place at the Artist's Club, Hotel Polonia, and the Institute of Art Propaganda. Here, Potworowski received a prize for his painting Three Women in the Interior. The following year, he held his first solo exhibition at the Makowski Salon in Poznań. This success was sustained through 1937 when the artist received a silver medal at the International Exhibition of Art and Technology in Paris, as well as the award from the Minister of Foreign Affairs. After this strong development, Potworowski had a travelling solo exhibition arranged, held in 1938 at the Institute of Propaganda of Art in Warsaw and then in Lviv.
Following the invasion of Poland in 1939, Potworowski escaped to Sweden via Lithuania. It was from here that the artist, with his wife and two young children, made his way to Britain, arriving in 1943. After serving in Scotland, Potworowski settled in London, and in January 1946, an exhibition of 33 of his works was held at the Redfern Gallery. This was followed by regular exhibitions with the Redfern, Gimpel Fils (1948 onwards) and The London Group, to which he was elected a member in 1949. He was also the president of the Association of Polish Artists and published regularly in the monthly magazine "Nowa Polska".
Potworowski's teaching career included eight years as Professor of Painting at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham (1949-57), where he had considerable European influence, specifically on abstraction, and was acknowledged by contemporaries including Peter Lanyon, Bryan Wynter...
