About the Item

Azaleas and Orchids, 2018 is part of the artist's "The Wholesalers" Series. This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 26.66" x 20" on 30.66" x 22" paper size. Signed on the Verso. Edition of 3. The Wholesalers series from 2018 is based on images taken while wandering the garment and flower districts of New York City. The photographs have their origins in the dizzying abundance of offerings spilling over onto sidewalks, crowded into storefronts and overflowing shops, and on the urban landscape reflected in their glass windows. In stark contrast to the immediacy and spontaneity of a camera phone, the work in the studio is a slow and deliberate editing process. Each image is manipulated on the screen by the artist's finger; its forms and colors are pushed, pulled, fragmented, swirled and swiped using an array of computer programs and applications. Cruz is pushing the boundaries between photography and painting. His Wholesalers series operates in that in-between space, redefining what a photo can be, and demonstrating how digital tools can give photography the fluid, interpretive power traditionally reserved for painting. It's both technically innovative and conceptually layered. Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. Framing is recommended before shipping. All work is shipped flat, not rolled.
