About the Item

Branding, Deep Creek by Adam Jahiel is a 13 x 13 inch silver gelatin print, available in an edition of 50. This photograph is dry mounted onto a 24 x 20 inch mat board. It is signed with edition number on over mat in pencil, signed with edition number on print margin in pencil, and titled on the mount verso. Branding, Deep Creek by Adam Jahiel depicts three cowboys surrounding a calf, attempting to wrangle the animal to brand it. Two lassos from opposite directions lead to the struggling calf, while one cowboy walks towards the animal. A seemingly tense scene gives an example of a routine task in the lives of cowboys and ranchers. Adam Jahiel, has had a varied professional career. He has worked extensively for the motion picture industry, working on projects as varied as Out of Africa to HBO comedy specials. But, Jahiel is also drawn to adventure projects, most notably as the photographer for the landmark French-American 1987 Titanic expedition. His work has appeared in most major U.S. publications, including Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, National Geographic Society and others. Jahiel's work also has appeared in literally dozens of books, including the acclaimed “The Day in a Life of” series. For years, Jahiel has been photographing the cowboys of the Great Basin, perhaps one of the most inhospitable regions of the already rugged West. These people represent one of the last authentic American subcultures, one that is disappearing at a rapid rate. Cowboying as an art form is almost obsolete; still, the cowboys hang on, with a ferocious tenacity. Respect there doesn't come from the trappings of modern life. Talent, knowledge and skill are valued above all else. And the cowboy tradition has its roots in the oldest of human conflicts: man against nature and man against himself. Jahiel tries to reflect those sentiments in these photographs. These cowboys aren't “remade” into a Hollywood image. Instead, they are “found” images, in keeping with the spirit of authenticity that permeates the best keepers of this tradition.

Mary Illen, Ft. Worth, TX by John Stryker, Silver Gelatin Print, Photography
By John Stryker
Located in Denton, TX
Mary Illen Ft. Worth, TX by John Stryker is a 10 x 8 inch silver gelatin print. This photograph is signed in ink on print recto and titled in pencil on print verso. This photograph features a cowgirl riding a light colored horse, resting at a river. The horse reaches down to the water for a drink, while the woman looks down lovingly at the horse. John Stryker was born in Rockford, Illinois, September 1, 1883. He is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"*- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He invented the chute that the animals come out of and he developed new ways of photographing action during an event. Dramatic shots were taken from the ground, propping his camera on the toe of his right boot right next to a bucking bronco. Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport. His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. His photographs have been published widely including Life, Look, The Cattleman, The Western Horseman, and The Quarter Horse Journal. In 1977, The Rodeo of John Addison Stryker...
