About the Item

New York City Parade by Karl Struss is a vintage photograph documenting a crowd of people in the streets of New York City during a parade. This photograph is a vintage gelatin silver print, measuring 4 x 3 inches, with the mat measuring 17 x 14 inches. There is an artist stamp in blue ink and miscellaneous notations in pencil on print verso. Karl Struss was an American photographer and cinematographer born 1886, in New York. He studied photography at Columbian University under the guidance of Clarence White. Through his studies on photograph, Struss developed the Struss Pictorial Lens, a soft-focus lens popular with the pictorial photographers and the motion picture industry of the time. In 1914, Struss took over the photography studio of his former teacher, Clarence H. White, where he specialized in portraiture, advertising, and magazine illustration. Five years later he moved to Hollywood and started a new phase of his career as a cinematographer, filming movies such as Ben Hur (1925) and Sunrise (1927), for which he received the first Academy Award for cinematography.
