The artist writes: “This project consists of a series of bird portraits that celebrate beauty and visual pleasure. Because of their singular ability of soaring into the sky, birds are universally seen as an allegory of freedom. ‘Pajaritos’ (Small Birds) represent the landing place for my life journey and embracement of queer identity. They are also my way of transforming pretty into a statement of rebellion: the angelical beauty of canaries and finches resting on a perch in front of immaculate pastel color backgrounds are as much a statement of grace as a state of defiance.
“I was initially drawn to this idea of internal strife after seeing a painting by the Italian Renaissance Master Paolo Veronese where he portrays the ‘Temptation of St. Anthony.’ Here Veronese shows St. Anthony attacked by a muscular male demon and simultaneously seduced by the devil in the form of a beautiful woman. My favorite detail is the shape of the woman’s fingers, which resemble talons. The way she caresses St. Anthony’s palm implies that no matter what guise temptation takes, one is always able to recognize it by its sharp claw. This reminded me of the struggle with my own sexuality growing up: the fear of not being able to escape from my own self and not knowing whether I could to be true to who I was amid the pressures to conform.
“I grew up in Honduras, where ‘pajaros’ is a derogative term for gay men. With my project I embrace two cultural references: the constrictive idea that in our culture colors define gender—blue for boys, pink for girls—and the liberating realization that I can defy the expected by emphasizing the delicate beauty of birds with the flamboyant use of pastel colors. These conflicting ideas are both reconciliatory and cathartic; they are a deconstruction of gender norms.
“Photographs are printed with archival pigment inks on paper and mounted on Plexiglas. Frames are painted to match the predominant background color of each photo—the dimensions of each piece are 19 x 15 inches.”
Daniel Handal is a Honduran-born artist who lives and works in New York City. He received his BS in Applied Sciences from Rutgers University and studied photography at the International Center of Photography. Handal’s work centers on portraiture and explores issues of gender, sexuality, identity, and community. He has had a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Public Library (Flatbush Branch) and has been shown in group exhibitions at the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Deborah Colton Gallery in Houston, and The powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, among others. He has been exhibited internationally at the Australian Centre for Photography and MKII in London. Handal’s work has been published in The Huffington Post, Slate, and Hyperallergic. He has been awarded residencies at The Millay Colony for the Arts, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Handal currently serves on the board of directors of Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York.

“During the research process for a prior series of photographs, I discovered two related facts about my family tree: a) Mary Bliss Parsons, my 8th great-grandmother, was accused of witchcraft in 1674 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and b) less than two decades later in 1692, my 10th great-grandfather, Samuel Sewell, presided as a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. One body of work came and went, but this ancestral coincidence stayed with me. What is a witch? Who does that word belong to—now?
“Major Arcana: Witches in America is a collection of portraits of women from across the United States who identify as witches. As early as 15th-century Europe, people condemned as witches faced a cruel fate: torture, and in many cases, death. Yet despite its history, recent decades have seen a reclaiming of the word ‘witch.’ In the mid-20th century, emerging pagan communities in the United States and Europe began embracing the term, and since then, ‘witch’ has been adopted by a diverse group of people.
“Major Arcana explores the various ways the notion of witch-ness belongs to those who claim it, representing the witch as a self-sought identity that both empowers and politicizes its bearer. Each woman photographed for Major Arcana (including genderfluid and trans individuals) pursues a form of witchcraft, whether aligned with a religion (like Wicca or Voudou) or a self-defined practice. No two individuals inhabit the term ‘witch’ in quite the same way, but many consider themselves pagan, and engage in a diversity of traditions, including: mysticism, engagement with the occult, politically-oriented activism, polytheism, ritualized ‘spell-craft,’ and plant-based healing.
