Gina Soden spent the night in this deserted hotel, making her way to the top floor in search of a room with the best protection from the rain and wind. There was scaffolding everywhere, the floor was shaky, and the staircase was extremely difficult to photograph. She used a superclamp to secure her camera, which she then fastened to some scaffolding. Because she isn't very tall, she felt a little uncomfortable leaning over to set up the camera for the shot. It was a massive hotel in Italy with an amazing view that was well-known at the time but is now completely abandoned and awaiting renovations.
The photographic work of Gina Soden is incredibly poetic. She manages to give these unusual places a beauty they’ve either lost or never had to start with. With her pictorial treatment and a lyrically artistic approach the artist awakens a magic that inhabits these places and embellishes them, through her detailed compositions, with a triumphant aspect. The colours astonish, the light, almost divine, bedazzles and the haunting disorder of these places seems somehow to be appeased.
