About the Item

Nancy Cunard, 1924 - Cecil Beaton (Portrait Photography) Inscribed with title and stamped with photographer's copyright ink stamp on reverse Silver gelatin print, printed later 9 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches Provenance: Staley-Wise Gallery, New York Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) rose to prominence in the early twentieth century, famed for his portraits, fashion photography and his association with London’s Bright Young Things. Beaton began his long association with Vogue magazine in the mid-1920s and his first solo exhibition, which established his reputation, quickly followed in 1927. This portrait of Nancy Cunard, taken in Paris in 1924, is an early example of his style of portraiture. Cunard was a British poet, heiress and political activist who moved to Paris in 1920 and quickly became an important figure in the Parisian cultural avant-garde. She was associated with some of the most influential artistic figures of the time, including celebrated members of the Surrealist, Dada and Modernist literary movements. In 1930, Cunard founded her own publishing house, The Hours, and was the first to publish Samuel Beckett’s poetry the same year. With her fierce individuality and striking bohemian look, Cunard became known as an eccentric representative of The Roaring Twenties. Cunard modeled for Beaton on several occasions. In this studio portrait, Cunard fixes the camera with a withering stare; with her casual slouching posture, Cunard captures the look of stylish indifference. Beaton continued to work for Vogue in London, Paris, and New York throughout the following decade. His portraiture took on an increasing reliance on close-ups of the face, often strongly modelled by contrasting light and shade, and also the increasing incorporation of floral motifs. Beaton’s aesthetic remained highly artful if not so brazenly artificial. After photographing Queen Elizabeth in Buckingham Palace in 1939, Beaton was invited to become the Royal photographer of choice. The following year, Beaton was appointed as an official photographer for the Ministry of Information. In his later career, Beaton’s focus turned increasingly towards Hollywood, contributing stage designs to the films, Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1964), which gained him an Oscar and made him a household name. Beaton died in England in 1980. The characteristics of the present work suggest it was likely made by Beaton and his studio in the 1950 or early 1960s.
