David Saxe - “Photography has always been the simple act of looking and being inspired to strip the unnecessary elements from the scene and frame the image down in a way to discover what is not apparent on the surface. My photographs are as much about me as what I am seeing:
In Southern California, 2010 is a perfect example of this process of seeing. When I first noticed this scene, it was a simple mural of a whale on a wall. After looking at it for a while I realized that by eliminating the sky and foreground from the image the whale now had an undulating rhythm and movement.
In another image Restaurant Hostess, Palm Beach, FL 2012, I would go to this restaurant every week and sit in the bar behind the reception area. One day, I turned around and saw the back of a woman. Through this process of deductive framing, the image became one of dark shadows rhythmically trickling down her back interwoven with the tattoo of the lizard.
David Saxe was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada in 1943 and studied fine art at l’ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal. JP Terlizzi (American, b.1962) is a New York City photographer whose contemporary practice explores themes of memory, relationship, and identity. His images are rooted in the personal and heavily influenced around the notion of home, legacy, and family. He is curious how the past relates and intersects with the present and how the present enlivens the past, shaping one’s identity.
Born and raised in the farmlands of Central New Jersey, JP earned a BFA in Communication Design at Kutztown University of PA with a background in graphic design and advertising. The Green-Winged Macaw can be mistaken for a Scarlet Macaw as from the front it is almost entirely red. It is distinguished by a greenish band of feathers below the shoulders and wings. The green band transitions to dark blue on the wings, and there is light blue on the rump and on the tail feathers.
Animal photography is about being ready for the split-second moment when it happens. This takes a certain amount of production. The studio set-up, the lighting and the camera settings can all be planned but the magic moment is seldom planned. It just happens naturally and you need to be prepared. Whether you capture it will depend on patience, concentration and reflex. This is seldom more true than when capturing birds in flight. The human eye can’t process the speed at which birds fly. The only way we can fully appreciate the beauty of feathered flight is to watch it in slow motion or freeze it at several thousandths of a second.

Tim Platt specialises in creating minimal stylised studio portraits of birds and animals, which he describes as beauty shots. A frozen moment in time allows us to observe the world in suspension and will often reveal a graphic beauty that might otherwise flash by in the blink of an eye and remain unnoticed.
Whether observing the magnified eye of a bullfrog, or an eagle captured at several thousandths of a second in mid-flight, he is fascinated by the level of detail that can be revealed in a large format print. It is the stillness of a photograph that gives us time to pause and marvel at the myriad levels of detail in Nature’s grand design and allows us to reflect on the wonderful diversity of life on Earth.

Elise Gagliardi is an experimental multi-media artist. She studies photography at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She graduated with her BFA in 2006. Her work has been exhibited nationally. It has been featured in various publications. She currently works as a curator and a mother raising her three young children. Since becoming a mother she has embraced a heritage of storytelling. In her work, she introspectively examines her relationship to the matriarchal figures in her life and contemplates her own legacy. Her work is best described through the words of Author Joseph Campbell in what he describes as “The Myth of the Eternal Return”.
