Canadians have a funny kind of national identity, meaning specifically we do not really have one. To say that there is a national identity is to enter into a discussion without end -because there are just too many different kinds of people in Canada- it would be impossible to pin identity to anything, let alone a top-down Multicultural Act, or a Group of Seven. Strangely though, in art, that is exactly where Canadian begins, with a Group of Seven. In Diana Thorneycroft’s new series Group of Seven Awkward Moments, the momentous humor Canada is famous for is contrasted with the nation’s dirty little secret: that it is not funny at all, and in fact, much too serious, bordering on menacing.
The new series of works falls into a line of art objects created by Canadian artists within the last few years that utilize parody and play to explode the hallowed imagery of nationalized corporatism. Some of David Halliday's most engaging works are those from his Box Series in which he merges traditional ideas about light and composition with contemporary experiments. In this series an empty cookie tin becomes a tiny studio for food objects. Halliday carefully styles his photographic subjects inside and, allowing only natural light to seep in through a circular window. The results feel less like still lifes and more like intimate portraits of human sustenance. In these photographs, the fleshy curves of a fig, the slick bodies of sardines, even the homeliest porcini mushrooms possess a degree of nobility, providing a refreshing contrast to the compulsive relationship we so often have with food, reminding us to slow down and savor with gratitude.
In this particular image, the waxy texture of a solid hunk of salty parmesan cheese and its crumbles is gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting!

About the artist:
Born in 1948 in the French Alps, Jean Turco spent his adolescence in Chamonix Mont Blanc. He awarded a diploma in photography and made numerous images of high mountain. At the age of 20, he left "the valley" for Paris where he is going to exercise as a game an activity which fascinates him and will allow him to visit a lot of distant countries by taking in his luggage Leica IIIf and Hasselblad which share his life. He has so produced in Europe, in the United States or in Emirates and Sultanates of the Gulf, uncountable landscapes and portraits; his taste for these last ones asserting itself during journeys in India and in Pakistan. In 2000, he rethought his implication in the photography and decided to dedicate himself to it full-time. He abandoned then quite other activity, tidied up his inseparable IIIf and Hasselblad in a cupboard, took back his Sinar P 20x25 and Nikon-digital then burned symbolically and without mood, his negatives and archival to start all over again. Mainly intended for the exhibitions, he made more of seventy these last years, his photos concern since numerous subjects even if the portrait, the nude and the still life remain privileged. Except his personal works, except the writing of works and except the articles on the photography and workshop / studios which he runs in numerous European countries, Jean Turco works mainly on commission for private individuals or advertising agencies. He uses according to the use of the produced images everything kind of existing shot equipments but the Sinar P2, the chamber of size 8x10 inches (20x25 cm) big film photography format which he processes personally in his laboratory, became his favourite equipment. The beauty of Tina West’s latest show lies in the maturity and wonder of her still lives. For every photo, West stages her scene with unique treasures from her vast collection. Allowing them to speak to her, rather than the opposite, each object is chosen not because of an image West is trying to recreate from her mind, but because of each object’s sheer attraction.
The sharp subconscious connection West feels to her still life objects comes across strongly. This produces a magical end product that has both transformed and repurposed the photographed objects entirely. Though still lives are considered a classic image, West exemplifies a charming, experimental take that pushes the boundaries of the historical still life.
