About the Item
In this work from At the Center of Seeing, a dark, six-pointed star anchors the center, radiating outward in pulses of amber, peach, and glowing white. The form is sharp yet dissolving, its edges flickering between solidity and light. Surrounding orbs bend and ripple like molten glass, bordered by dark lines that feel both architectural and organic.
The image carries an intensity that suggests both cosmic and cellular structures—a star exploding into being, or a microscopic world magnified into vision. Its symmetry is charged, almost kinetic, echoing the video motion from which it was extracted.
As with others in the series, Cruz isolates a single frame from an endlessly shifting kaleidoscopic sequence, revealing an emblem that feels at once symbolic and discovered: a fleeting alignment of chaos into radiant form.
This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 22" x 16" on 24" x 18" paper size. Signed in pencil, within the image, lower right.

In this recent work, the artist has focused on the production of abstract painterly images using a variety of digital methods and processes. These new images are at, what he calls, the “Center of Seeing” - closeups of a moment in time and space from the center of his digitally made kaleidoscopic videos. These captured images contain circle, star, or other primal geometric shapes – some resembling mandalas or flowers of a new interior space. Spiritual, psychological, with an emanating quality of light, they are vaguely familiar yet new.
Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. His studio is located in the Flower District in Manhattan.

Gary Cruz
Gary Cruz begins his creative process with the camera on his phone. Trained as an architect and designer, Cruz has a particular interest in creating and conflating depth within the pictorial plane. His final images compress space where the back is front and outside is inside. Past, present and future coexist simultaneously in his work where space is ambiguous. The works embody the duality of contemporary photographic techniques and the tradition of gestural painting. Cruz earned a degree in architecture from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. He attended the Bronx Museum of the Arts, AIM Program, Bronx, New York. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant and Robert Rauschenberg Change Inc. Grant. A native of Texas, Cruz now lives and works in New York City.
