Gertrud Goldschmidt, more commonly known as Gego during the course of her multifarious career, was a sculptor, printmaker, and painter. Gego was born in Germany where she trained in architecture and engineering. In 1939, she was forced to emigrate to Venezuela where, in addition to working as an architect and industrial designer, Gego began to experiment with watercolor, monotypes, and engravings. Her art always addressed the relationship between objects and architectural space, using pure abstraction. Though she never identified with any movement, Gego distanced herself from traditions of abstraction late in her career. She began to use “poor” materials like industrial scraps and metals, and to experiment with random procedures
