About the Item

The beauty of repeated geometric form is a motif that has played a central role in Havens’ work. Dynamic and colorful compositions play with line and shape to suggest larger spaces, both natural and manmade. The works presented at ODETTA are based upon a simple linear pattern that is layered to produce depth and movement, employing masks, stencils and by also slightly turning the pattern in subsequent layers to create a variety of patterns. For the works included in Transcendental at ODETTA, some consist of as few as three layers while others have more than twenty. Matti Wim Havens was born in the Netherlands and raised in Central New York. Furthermore, he has lived, studied and/or worked in Ecuador, Italy, South Korea, Switzerland and Poland. Immediately after earning his MFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art he had a six-month residency in Zurich, Switzerland in 2007. He also had a residency at The Artist House at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the spring of 2015. His works include sculpture, installation, video art, music, collage, screen printing, photography, painting, and performance art. He has exhibited at ODETTA, Walter Wickiser Gallery and Lesley Heller Gallery in NYC, Galeria Entropia, and Studio BWA in Wroclaw, Poland, and many other galleries. His videos have been screened in The USA, The Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and Poland. His screen printing was created recently at the Art Student’s League in NYC.
