Comes from Graves' 1987 "Black Ground Series" portfolio of three intaglio prints, (Padon Nos. 65-67, page 108-109). The three works include "Anifoglie", "Neferchidea", and "Radix". Printed in four runs from four copperplates: 1 yellow, orange, solferino, and yellow green (aquatint); 2 yellow green, violet, and light yellow red (aquatint; 3 ultramarine, blue mille, and emerald green (aquatint); 4 black (etching, aquatint, and drypoint). Vigna Antoniniana Stamperia d'Arte and 2RC Edizioni d'Arte chop marks/blind stamps lower left. Processing, proofing, and printing supervised by Valter and Eleonora Rossi; edition printing by Adriano Corazzi, Antonio Di Leo, and Giuseppe Di Leo.
"Josef Albers's "interaction of Color", a course Graves had taken as a student at the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University in the early 1960's, was the inspiration for a series of paintings the artist completed between 1981 and 1983. In this related series of intaglio prints, Graves explored the optical effects of intense color against black grounds. In "Anifoglie", "Neferchidea", and "Radix", the artist also manipulated the ability of various intaglio print techniques to create distinct planar entities. Adding to the complex spatial readings is the artist's selective use of embossing that included areas of the black ground, creating forms that are read almost subliminally. Biography:
Nancy Graves (1939-1995) was an American artist, best known for her abstract paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations. Her work focused on exploring natural systems and environments, veiled by an aesthetic layer of ambiguity and colorful composition. “She sensed she was making art in the ‘information age,’” the director of the present-day Nancy Graves foundation, Christina Hunter, has said of her work. “And people like Julie Mehretu have looked very closely at her work.” Born on December 23, 1939 in Pittsfield, MA, Graves graduated from Vassar College before earning her BFA and MFA at Yale University, where she befriended fellow prominent artists such as Brice Marden, Janet Fish, and Richard Serra, whom she would go on to marry in 1965. Graves was celebrated as an influential figure in Post-Minimalist art, and in 1969 was the youngest person to ever have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art at the age of 29. She was the recipient of numerous honors and awards, such as a 1964 Fulbright Scholarship and the Skowhegan Medal for Drawing/Graphics in 1980. The artist died following a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in New York, NY on October 21, 1995 at the age of 55.
