"My work is driven by intuitive and loose paint application, spontaneous expression, illusionist space, muted color washes, occasional iconic imagery, random marks, and other graphic techniques. I want the work to capture the viewer with pictorial opera and tenacious energy. I try to create a plane of dynamic randomness with complex compositional strategies and visual drama" -Peter Foley Peter Foley is a San Francisco Bay Area artist who works in a variety of media and materials. Combining unrelated aspects which lead to surprising analogies and by experimenting with aleatoric processes, he makes work that generates diverse meanings. Associations and senses collide, space becomes time and language becomes image. With the use of appropriated materials, he formalizes the random and emphasizes the process of structure that is behind the seemingly random marks. His thought processes, which are intuitive, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to the moment, are revealed in his compositions. His work questions the legitimacy of an image in the context of contemporary visual culture in which images, representations and ideas normally function. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, he wants to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil lyrical passages that leave traces and balances on the edge of recognition and alienation.
