Amalia Avia, Biography
Amalia Avia Peña was born on April 23, 1930, in Santa Cruz de la Zarza (Toledo) and died on March 30, 2011, in Madrid after a life initially marked by the pain of the Spanish Civil War. Her artistic training began in the 1950s at Eduardo Peña's studio in Madrid, where she laid the foundations for what would become her distinctive realistic style.
At the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, she met those who would become her friends and colleagues of her generation: Antonio López García, Julio López Hernández, Francisco López Hernández, Isabel Quintanilla, Esperanza Parada, Carmen Laffon, Joaquín Ramo, Enrique Gran, and Lucio Muñoz, whom she married in 1960. This group would later be known as the "Madrid Realists."
Her first solo exhibition took place in 1959 at the Fernando Fe Gallery in Madrid. From 1964 onwards, she exhibited her work in the prestigious Juana Mordó and Biosca galleries. Her career includes numerous national and international exhibitions, notably the major retrospective held at the Villa de Madrid Cultural Center in 1997, on which occasion she received the Medal of Artistic Merit from the Madrid City Council.
Amalia Avia's painting, although classified as realistic, was never hyperrealistic. Her favorite subjects were the urban landscapes of Madrid: empty streets, deteriorated facades, old shops, and places marked by the passage of time. As Camilo José Cela noted, she was "the painter of absences, the bitter chronicler of 'life passed through here'." In her works, there is a particular attention to details that usually go unnoticed, sensitively capturing the human imprint in seemingly empty spaces.
In 2004, she published her memoirs, "De puertas adentro" (Behind Closed Doors), a valuable testimony of her life and times, acclaimed for the naturalness of her writing and for reflecting a life of contrasts: a youth marked by war and a later stage that was "luminous and happy" in the art world environment.
Her work is part of important public collections such as the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toledo, and various international museums. Her artistic legacy continues to be the subject of study and revaluation, as demonstrated by the exhibition "El Japón en Los Ángeles. Los archivos de Amalia Avia" held at Sala Alcalá 31 in Madrid in 2022, which reviewed her work from a contemporary perspective.
