Richard Stone Reeves
The Five Greatest J Ever Rode

1974

About the Item

This colorful lithograph By Reeves is in perfect condition and never was framed or hung before. It is hand signed and numbered 17/750. Richard Stone Reeves (November 6, 1919 – October 7, 2005) was an American equine painter whom Blood-Horse magazine described as perhaps the greatest modern-day horse painter. His big break came when Life magazine featured his painting of 1947 Horse of the Year, Armed. That publicity led to his being hired to do private portraitures for many American and European horse owners. As well as portraits, Reeves did a number of action scenes from memorable races. More than a dozen of his works can be found in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York.

I digitally design 3-D objects and compositions, and cut them in slices from different types of plastic sheet materials. These slices are then fixed to a rigid canvas, a pedestal or held together in space. Most of my work is done using acrylic sheets with different levels of translucency in a range of colors, graphic patterns, textures and photographic images directly printed on the sheets' surfaces. The bright and fully saturated color palettes to which I instinctively gravitate to, is heavily influenced by the traditional Mexican arts and crafts...
