Drawing is a true touchstone of an artist's skill—and Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was a master of it. With the exception of a hiatus in the 1960s, Warhol drew prolifically throughout his career, from his days as an art student in the 1940s until the last few weeks before his death in 1987. His career was founded on the production of commercial art, primarily drawings, in the 1950s and early 1960s. Many of his personal drawings from this period are represented here—portraits, nudes, and still lifes, executed with a stunning minimalist grace. In more playful moments, he produced stylized and lovingly drawn cats, fantastical shoes, flower fairies, and cheeky angelic cupids. These colorful drawings were precursors to his iconic Pop Art images. Realistically drawn small works paved the way for great motifs: the Campbell's Soup cans, the dollar bills, and Mao Tse-tung. As noted by Mark Francis in the present volume, "For more than thirty years Andy Warhol created a coherent, consistent, and prolific body of drawings in which his deepest fears and his ideals of beauty were plainly and simply outlined."
