About the Item

Chambre ave nuage No.3, 2009 24 color screenprint Edition of 200 35 x 40.5 in. (88.9 x 102.9 cm.) Guo Wei (Chinese, b.1960) was born in Chengdu, China, where he currently lives and works. He graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1989, and has been exhibited internationally since 1988. Guo’s work focuses on the individual and the development of self in China. The isolation of the individual due to the Communist system is an important theme for the artist. He addresses feelings of emptiness and desolation, which new generations of Chinese youth experience in cities. Guo’s subjects are often children and adolescents set in realistic compositions. He seeks to express private emotion, though his subjects often appear emotionally distanct. The viewer is often left shocked by the use of indistinct facial expressions and disturbing distortions on his teenage subjects. His portraits of Chinese youth capture the awkwardness of adolescence, and his depictions of the disaffected have a universal quality to them. Guo’s paintings are provocative and original, touching upon the experience of alienation in society, as well as feelings of alienation from within.
