Aldo Mazza (Milan, - Gavirate, 1964)
Aldo Mazza was an Italian painter, advertiser, designer and caricaturist. He grew up in an atmosphere marked by art and patriotism - his father and his uncle had participated in the defense of Milan, against the Austrians of Marshal Josef Radetzky. At the Academy of Brera he had Cesare Tallone as his teacher. He devoted himself to painting and in the meantime he illustrated children's books, for the publisher Vallardi. He designed satirical drawings for The departure of the crusader.
The first assignment as author of satirical cartoons was given by "Guerin Meschino", a magazine with which he collaborated for more than twenty years; he also designed for "Il Numero", for "L'Illustrazione Italiana", for "Il Secolo" (from 1924) and for "Il Pasquino". He was linked to the group of caricatures of the "Frigidarium". In 1983, the exhibition The political satire in the drawings by Aldo Mazza was set up in Milan.
He worked as a poster designer especially for the Bolognese firm Chappuis, for the Graphic Arts Bertarelli and for Ricordi, realizing about sixty posters, among advertising and politicians; he also designed theatrical posters, calendars and postcards in chromolithography. Titles of some of his posters: Birra Italia, Shell Lubricants, Articles for Photography Ganzini, Bicycles Bianchi, La Rinascente, Credito Italiano, Magazzini Vittoria.
He designed a Shell advertising campaign on a postcard, and during the Great War he created postcards for the National Loan. A large group of his posters, made during the Great War, like Don't let me miss the ammunition! (1917), I am in Rome, at the Library of Modern and Contemporary History.
