This artwork, titled "Doreen", done in 1983, is an original color serigraph by renown Navajo artist Rudolph Carl Gorman, 1932-2005. It is hand signed and numbered E.P.I. in pencil by the artist ( E.P.I. refers to "Editions Press Impression", one of ten impressions done for the publisher.) With the blind stamp of the artist and the printer, Editions Press, San Francisco. The edition size was 150 plus proofs (a total of 45 proofs). The sheet size is 26.25 x 33.25 inches, framed size is 39.25 x 45.25 inches. Custom framed in a wooden oak frame, it is floating, with a deep red liner and with natural linen matting. The artwork is in excellent condition. The frame is in very good condition, it has minor restorations, practically invisible. This artwork titled "Mujeres de Mexico" 1973 is an original colors lithograph on Wove paper by renown Costa Rican/Mexican artist Francisco Zuniga, 1912-1998. It is hand signed, dated and numbered XX/XXV in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 22.25 x 30.75 inches, framed size is 34.5 x 42.25 inches. Published by Editions Press, San Francisco, with their blind stamp at the lower right corner. Referenced and pictured in the artist's catalogue raisonne by Brewster plate #5. Beautifully custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with fabric matting and gold color bevel. It is in excellent condition, the frame have some light discoloration at the left side, please see picture #1. About the artist: Internationally acclaimed sculptor and printmaker Francisco Zuñiga was born in Costa Rica. He studied drawing, stone sculpture, and engraving at the School of Fine Arts in San Jose. Later, in 1936, he studied stone carving at La Esmeralda in Mexico City. He was appointed to the faculty of La Esmeralda where he remained until his retirement in 1970. Zuniga's art reflects a love and respect for Central American people and traditions. In 1972, he created his first lithograph. As a complement to his emotionally powerful sculpture, Zuniga's prints articulate the sensitivity and sensuality of the human figure. He has been the recipient of numerous international prizes and awards. His work is exhibited frequently in prominent galleries throughout the world and may be found in the permanent collections of twenty-nine museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, and the Phoenix Art Museum. In 1936, Francisco Zuniga left San Jose, Costa Rica, where he had studied drawing at the School of Fine Arts and worked as an assistant in his father's studio, a workshop which produced religious sculpture for the churches and convents in and around the city. His destination was Mexico City. It was from there that he would begin an illustrious career as a sculptor and draftsman. Zuñiga's exploration into the nuances of volume, in line and space, are demonstrated in this, the most complete exhibition of his work to be shown in more than a decade. Mexico City in 1936 was, even then, one of the major art centers of the Americas. As such it witnessed and participated in many of the frenzied and controversial art movements which reflected the political and intellectual climate of the first three decades of the twentieth century. Muralism, the graphic arts, the incorporation of in-ternational movements had produced an artistic climate, which would eventually attract to Mexico international artists and intellectuals such as Sergei Eisenstein...

Francisco Zúñiga (Mexican, 1912-1998) Seated nude with extended legs. This woman with eyes heavy in meditation shows a myriad of emotions including humility, vulnerability and fatigue. José Jesús Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría (December 27, 1912 – August 9, 1998) was a Costa Rican-born Mexican artist, known both for his painting and his sculpture. Journalist Fernando González Gortázar lists Zúñiga as one of the 100 most notable Mexicans of the 20th century, while the Encyclopædia Britannica calls him "perhaps the best sculptor" of the Mexican political modern style. Zúñiga was born in Guadalupe, Barrio de San José, Costa Rica on December 27, 1912 to Manuel Maria Zúñiga and María Chavarría, both sculptors. His father worked as a sculptor of religious figures, and in stone work. His artistic inclinations began early and by the age of twelve had already read books on the history of art, artistic anatomy and the life of various Renaissance painters. At age fifteen he began working in his father’s shop. This experience sensitized him to shape and spaces. In 1926 he enrolled in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Mexico, but left the following year to continue on his own. As part of his self-study, he studied German Expressionism and the writings of Alexander Heilmayer, through which he learned of the work of two French sculptors, Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin, coming to appreciate the idea of subordinating technique to expression. Zúñiga’s painting and sculpting work began receiving recognition in 1929. His first stone sculpture won second prize at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes.
