Like a Rolling Snowball (2019). Lithograph by Izumi Kato
Limited edition of 300 numbered and signed by the artist
17 7/10 × 13 4/5 in 45 × 35.1 cm
Edition 155/300
"Like a Rolling Snowball" by Izumi Kato is a striking lithograph that embodies the artist’s signature surreal and primitive figurative style. The artwork features a haunting humanoid figure with exaggerated, mask-like facial features—large, hollow eyes, an elongated nose, and a small, pursed mouth—set against a stark black background. The heavy black outlines and expressive linework give the face a sense of raw, almost totemic presence.
At the top of the figure’s head, colorful handwritten text in a playful yet irregular style announces "Izumi Kato: Like a Rolling Snowball", alongside details of an exhibition held at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and Hara Museum ARC in Japan (2019–2020). The vibrant mix of red, yellow, blue, and green in the lettering contrasts sharply with the monochromatic tones of the rest of the composition, adding a spontaneous and almost childlike energy to the otherwise solemn figure.
This lithograph is part of a limited edition of 300, as indicated by the numbering at the bottom. It is signed by Izumi Kato and printed on high-quality paper, featuring a blindstamp from Idem Paris, a prestigious printmaking studio known for its collaborations with contemporary artists.
Kato’s work often explores themes of ancestry, identity, and the primal connection between humans and nature. This piece is no exception—its mysterious, otherworldly presence evokes a deep emotional response, blurring the line between the ancient and the modern, the spiritual and the physical.

Izumi Kato
Izumi Kato (b. 1969, Shimane Prefecture, Japan) is a contemporary artist known for his surreal and enigmatic paintings and sculptures. His work explores the intersection of the physical and spiritual realms, often depicting humanoid figures with exaggerated features that evoke a sense of primal existence. Kato studied oil painting at Musashino Art University, graduating in 1992. Unlike many artists, he took an unconventional path, working in manual labor before fully dedicating himself to art in his 30s. This background has influenced his approach, resulting in a raw and intuitive style. His paintings are often created without traditional brushes, as he applies pigment directly with his hands, enhancing the organic and instinctual nature of his figures. In addition to painting, Kato is renowned for his sculptures, which are crafted from wood, stone, and soft vinyl. These three-dimensional works bring his mysterious beings to life, blurring the lines between reality and myth. His art is deeply connected to Japanese folklore and spirituality, particularly drawing from the cultural heritage of his native Shimane, a region rich in Shinto traditions. Kato gained international recognition after participating in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. Since then, he has exhibited widely in major institutions and galleries across the world, and his works are held in esteemed public and private collections. He continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art while maintaining a deeply personal and instinctive creative process. Currently, he lives and works between Tokyo and Hong Kong, further expanding his artistic vision and global influence.
