Printed on 300gr off-white Arches velin paper, combining a traditional soft ground etching using a copper plate with unique hand-finished elements in pencil and watercolor. Hand signed lower right by Javier Calleja. Hand numbered 28/70 lower left. Artwork size 31.5 x 23.6 inches. Frame size: 34 x 26.5 inches. Published by Avant Arte.
Artwork is in excellent condition. Certificate of authenticity included. All reasonable offers will be considered.
About the Artist: Javier Calleja (b. 1971) is a contemporary Spanish artist living and working in Malaga, Spain. Calleja is most known for his figurative style of cartoonish, doe-eyed characters with exaggerated features. His style is influenced by the toys and comics from his 70s and 80s upbringing. Calleja’s characters are often accompanied by text that contrasts the innocent and adolescent looking facial expressions of the characters represented in the compositions. Calleja works in painting, sculpture, and works on paper.

Javier Calleja
Javier Calleja rose to art world prominence thanks to his instantly recognizable figurative works, which often feature squat, wide-eyed characters with exaggerated proportions. The Spanish artist’s practice spans painting, sculpture, and works on paper, as well as an array of editioned work and merchandise. Calleja has shown at galleries in Madrid, Barcelona, New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, among other major cities. A number of public collections throughout Spain have acquired his work. In March 2021, Calleja’s secondary-market record broke US$1 million for the first time, when his 2019 painting Waiting for a While sold for HK$8.8 million (US$1.1 million). Though he draws on personal experience and childhood memories to create his iconic characters, Calleja prefers not to explain his work, instead letting the observer “finish” the work with their own interpretations.

Rubbing in the lower left image area obscuring the publishing information (which reads Published by Mm. Darchery, St. James Street March 11, 1783), scattered light foxing, corner loss, top left corner, well outside of image area. "SMP" collector's stamp in red ink on the verso (not in Lugt), and the name "Renier" and the initials "AR" in black ink on the verso. Colors are extremely fresh. Impressions of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the British Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art.
