Jean Jansem (1920-2013) Sophie aux bas rouges, 1993 Lithographie sur papier Arches, justifiée E/A Signée en bas à droite 66 x 50 cm / 76 x 56 cm Bibliographie: CR Jansem, 2000, n°93 "Ma première lithographie date de 1954. Elle représente un enfant en haillons portant deux seaux d'eau, d'après un croquis rapporté de Cordoue lors de mon voyage en Espagne en 1952. Je l'exécutai sur pierre, au pinceau et à l'encre lithographique. Je fus déçu du résultat et n'en tirai qu'un essai et une épreuve. Quatre ans plus tard, je réalisai une dizaine de nouvelles lithographies, toujours sur pierre, la plupart en noir. Au lieu d'employer l'encre et le crayon lithographiques, j'utilisai l'encre zincographique plus fluide me permettant de travailler à la plume ou avec de fins pinceaux de martre. Le tirage fut très satisfaisant. au grand étonnement du Père Guillard, lithographe. Jusqu'alors l'encre zincographique ne servait qu'à la zincographie. Actuellement elle est d'un usage courant puisque pratiquement toutes les lithographies se font sur zinc et non plus sur pierre, ce qui facilite la manipulation. Par ailleurs, le zinc offre autant de possibilités que la pierre. En 1959, La Guilde de la Gravure me demanda une édition en couleur. Je choisis une nature morte aux chardons, tirée à 220 exemplaires. Par la suite, les tirages varièrent de 10 à 160 épreuves. Mes lithographies en couleur étaient assez proches de mes toiles. A partir de 1968, période de La Danse, je supprimai petit à petit le clair-obscur et la matière pour donner plus de légèreté et de transparence. Les lithographies postérieures à 1970 sont dessinées en noir sur un fond coloré souvent volontairement arbitraire, donnant l'aspect d'un dessin rehaussé. La couleur n'est pas intégrée au dessin mais joue un rôle d'accompagnement du trait qui est lui-même une arabesque écrite. Quand le noir est en place, je procède à des essais variés de couleurs et décide de choisir celui qui me semble le plus intéressant. Parfois une variante donne lieu à un petit nombre de tirages que l'on appelle «états». Ils sont toujours mentionnés et numérotés. Dans mes dernières lithographies la couleur est souvent dans la forme. Elle épouse le contour du graphisme. Le rythme coloré oblige quelquefois à alléger ou renforcer le noir du dessin. Le noir au blanc est un procédé qui permet d'obtenir un trait en blanc sur un fond noir ou en couleur. Toutes ces possibilités et bien d'autres encore, le côté inattendu des hasards qui naissent de la technique, permettent des improvisations qui enrichissent et donnent une autre dimension au dessin. Celui-ci devient alors une lithographie originale, avec sa propre expression. Tout cela contribue à rendre ce travail passionnant". Jean Jansem St. Aignan sur Cher novembre 1993

Jean Jansem (Hovhannes Semerdjian) 1920-2013 Bursa, Ottoman Turkish Empire Hovhannes "Jean" Semerdjian (Armenian: Հովհաննես "Ժանսեմ" Միրիջանի Սեմերջյան, 9 March 1920 – 27 August 2013), also known as Jean Jansem, was a French-Armenian painter. Jansem's artworks are internationally known, and are part of museum collections throughout France, Japan and the United States. A Foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (2002). He was awarded by the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1953 and by the Knight of the French Legion of Honour in 2003. The President of Armenia awarded Jansem a Medal of Honor for his “reinforcement of Armenian-French cultural ties.” Hovhannes Semerdjian was born in 1920 in Bursa, then in the Ottoman Empire. In 1922, his family fled to Greece. He spent his childhood in Thessaloniki. They arrived to Issy-les-Moulineaux suburb of Paris, France in 1931 when he was 11 and that is when he begin to paint. The first professional schools for Jansem became the academies of Montparnasse (1934–1936). He studied in the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. His teachers were Maurice Brianchon, Raymond Legueult and Roland Oudot. Jansem also studied at the Sabatie studio for a year. Early paintings by Jansem were mainly on national issues. Lauderdale Beach Scene by the iconic NY/Florida artist and world traveler. Carl Brandien (1886-1965), and his wife Kathleen first came to Ft. Lauderdale from New York City in 1941. They loved the area and moved there permanently two weeks before Pearl Harbor. Brandien, who called himself the vagabond artist, traveled with Kathleen around the world on a quest for life, and to discover and paint beauty. Brandien did commercial illustration for many magazines including Life. He opened his Little Studio at 716 E. Las Olas, in Ft. Lauderdale in 1942. The Miami Herald, January 16, 1944, pictured Brandien and his wife. “With inspiration from the war and the fight for democracy, Carl Brandien, America’s ‘Vagabond artist,’ here with his versatile British-born wife, Kay, at their Fort Lauderdale studio, believes that American artists are destined to produce the finest art of all times…Now hanging at the White House is his painting ‘Stars and Stripes’ depicting the U.
