About the Item

Signed, titled, and numbered, in pencil. The proposed edition was 100 although it is very unlikely that these were printed. This large and intensely urban lithograph, Family Flats, by Millard Sheets, portrays the Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles. Now drastically changed, it's still home to the Angels Flight funicular railway built in 1901. Sheets (1907-1989) was a painter, watercolorist, printmaker, mosaic artist, and teacher, who worked in Southern California. He attended the Chouinard Art institute and studied with F. Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle. As a teenager he was elected to membership in the prestigious California Water Color Society. In addition to the Chouinard Art Institute he taught at the Otis Art Institute (eventually becoming director) and Scripps College. During the Depression, with Edward Bruce, he administered the Public Works of Art Project; during World War II he was an artist-correspondent for Life magazine and the United States Army Air Forces in India and Burma. The lithograph Family Flats, 1935, is related to the painting, Tenement Flats, 1934, that once hung in President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s White House Office, now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. An impression of Family Flats was featured in True Grit, American Prints from 1900 to 1950, at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, from October 15, 2019, to January 19, 2020.
