Folk Art Limited Edition Print 1/20 Morocco African Desert Voyage Dogs Camels

2012

About the Item

This vibrant Folk Art Limited Edition Print is made from a painting on board by the fabulous British Canadian artist Nancy Patterson. It comes from her series ‘Days in the Desert Sun, Nights Under the Magical Moon’, a compelling set of works in the Folk idiom made by Nancy about her life on the edge of the Desert in Southern Morocco. The images tell the narratives, the tales of the community that over the past eighteen years she has become part of. Artwork details: Nancy Patterson, Dar Sidi Bounou, lithographic print, Edition 1 of 20, unframed 27.5 cm x 34cm, 2012. Signed in the print on the front, signed on the back. Provenance, directly from the artist studio. Condition: in excellent condition. There is something very comforting about the term Folk Art, derived from the idea that a work of art is firmly rooted in the community it depicts. Folk Art can initiate feelings of splendid joy. It is often misjudged as holding less regard that some of its fine-art cousins but we need look no further than the fabulous British artist Alfred Wallis or the captivating Canadian painter Maud Lewis to understand that Folk Art can be just as complex in its formal arrangements, compositions and choice of colour palette. Another myth, possibly by those who could not explain the beauty in the Folk Art form, is that this type of art is the sole premise of artists who have had no formal training. This print, after the painting Dar Sidi Bounou shows Nancy's place Dar Sidi in the town of Bounou. In the paintings series, 'Days in the Desert Sun, Nights Under the Magical Moon', Nancy is more often than not seen in her narrative paintings. In Nancy’s own words, 'Excursions into the desert are great fun, but they require a lot of organisation which also means quite a lot of hanging around, however hanging around can be very entertaining as there is always a lot of busy activity to watch. Then eventually when everything is loaded in the camel’s big baskets, off we go at a leisurely pace for a few hours, headed to the open dunes to find a nice place to set up camp and cook supper in a Tajine, on a fire made with bits of wood picked up on the way. I am sitting on the white camel and my friend, Mo from Canada, is on the brown one. Daoud in a blue Gandoura is more or less, in charge of the arrangements with the help of Cambo and Dick, two of the five dogs who like to chase the cats away from the action. The guitar like instrument on the ground is a Guimbri, with some Karkabas, metal double castanets and a ceramic drum, so there will be music after sunset'. Please see the artist’s biography for more information and do feel free to contact us if you would like more details or images.
